People ask me all the time, “What’s the best time of year for fishing in Tampa Bay?”. I usually tell them that it’s whenever you can go. But, the truth of the matter is that fishing here in the spring is hard to beat. It’s my favorite time of year by far. Late February through the end of April can be amazing for monster sea trout, tons of redfish, and drag screaming snook… just to name a few of the species that perk up in the spring around here.
This Spring has been no different. It’s been a mild winter here and that has equated to amazing flats fishing. Redfish, snook, trout, spanish mackerel, and even a few cobia here and there have all been coming out to play. The ticket to success has been making sure we have a livewell full of bait and getting started early. Once we hit the flats, we’re looking for schools of mullet working and the game fish will be close by.
Potholes and cuts on low tides have been producing redfish up to 34″ on the start of the incoming tide. Once the water gets up, we’ve headed out to more open flats and drited for nice sized trout. If we hit the tides right and catch the first part of the outgoing tide, we’ve been able to hit up a few snook to round out the slam.
If you’re looking to get on some amazing flats fishing action, now is the time to go. Don’t forget that tarpon season is coming up very quickly and I’ll be headed to world famous Boca Grande to take you guys to the “Silver King”. Be sure to contact me today for availability and the best dates.
